The Quirky Wedding Fayre, Doncaster – A Colourful Celebration of All Things Alternative

If you’re planning a wedding that’s anything but ordinary, then Doncaster’s Quirky Wedding Fayre was your kind of playground. Held at the iconic Earl of Doncaster Hotel, this vibrant showcase brought together some of Yorkshire’s most creative wedding suppliers. I was buzzing to be part of it.

There were magical woodland weddings, retro vibes, and Halloween ceremonies – something for every couple. As a relaxed wedding photographer in Yorkshire who embraces the weird, wonderful, and all things creative, I’d found my people.

My Stand at the Quirky Wedding Fayre

My stand was simple but personal – a few framed prints with moss – a nod to my love of nature and its unpolished, outdoorsy beauty-ness! I had a vintage-style telephone guestbook on display – something I used at my own wedding (with hilarious results!). It’s a playful alternative to the traditional guestbook and always a hit with guests! If you missed it at the Fayre, you can still check out my Free Wedding Photography Guide here. It’s packed with tips to help you get the most out of your wedding photos without turning the day into a photoshoot.

A Day of Colour, Community and Creativity

One of the best parts of the day was chatting with couples who had big, bold plans for their weddings – and weren’t afraid to break the mould. Some were planning treehouse weddings (yes please!) while others were going all-in on Castle’s or Halloween vibes. The whole event was buzzing with fun, freedom, and creativity. These are exactly the kinds of weddings I love to photograph – relaxed, personal, and packed with soul.

Another thing that really stood out was how far people had travelled to be there. I met couples not just from Doncaster and wider Yorkshire, but also from the Midlands and even the North West. It shows when you’re planning a wedding that’s truly you, you’ll go the extra mile to find the right team. And I love that kind of dedication!

One couple even lived on an barge and are currently renovating it together. It felt like the perfect reflection of the kind of couples who came to this Fayre – people doing life their way and crafting something personal. I live opposite the canal in Todmorden so I get a daily glimpse of how much effort that lifestyle takes. There’s something really admirable about it; slow-paced, intentional, and creative – like some of the best weddings (though maybe not the slow-paced bit!).

Meet the Makers: Wedding Suppliers Who Brought the Magic

The room was bursting with talent – here are just a few of the suppliers that made the Fayre special:

  • Mavis Lane Flowers – Nature-led floral studio in East Yorkshire, creating thoughtful, sustainable designs with a personal touch.
  • Spellbound Ceremonies – Katie is a celebrant with a passion for storytelling, spooky fiction, and creating vibrant, inclusive ceremonies for free-spirited souls. With a background as a published author and a love for festivals, moorland wanders, and joyful knees-ups, she brings energy, warmth and a proper sense of celebration to every ceremony she leads
  • Rooted Ceremonies – I had a lovely chat with Joy, a heart-led celebrant based near Sherwood Forest who creates nature-inspired, symbolic ceremonies full of intention and meaning. She brings warmth, deep listening, and a beautiful grounding presence to her work – perfect for couples looking for something truly personal.
  • Megan Crook Textiles – the most vibrant, joy-filled fashion pieces for couples who want to wear their personality on their sleeves (literally).
  • Doo-Dars Cakes & Bakes – beautiful bakes – a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds.
  • Timeless Studios – based in Huddersfield, they were stationed next to me at the Fayre and were an absolute pleasure to chat to. Down-to-earth, friendly, and very good at what they do!
  • Vintage Cake Fairy – Alternative and very very creative non-traditional wedding cakes

Why These Events Matter

As a documentary wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to couples who value the feeling of the day – the laughter, the tears, and the unexpected moments. That matters more than ticking boxes. Fayres like this one are a reminder that weddings don’t have to fit a template. They can be as playful, messy, heartfelt, or unconventional as you want them to be.

And if you’re not sure where to start? That’s what we’re all here for. Whether it’s bespoke ceremonies, hand-crafted outfits or cakes full of character – there’s a load of creative suppliers ready to help bring your vision to life.
