First look bride and groom

Documentary Wedding Photography at Eaves Hall

Some weddings are big, bold, and packed to the rafters. Others are smaller, more intimate and relaxed, filled with the kind of warmth that only comes when two people have been in each other’s lives forever. Alice & Tom’s wedding at Eaves Hall was definitely that—the most gorgeous, laid-back celebration of two childhood sweethearts who’ve been together since they were 17 (having known each other since they were 12, yes 12!!).

With just 30 guests in the day and 30 more in the evening, it felt beautifully personal, filled with happy faces, meaningful moments, and a certain furry friend who stole the show, I’m looking at you, Penny!). Days like this are perfect for my documentary wedding photography approach, less people means more time to connect with guests.

An Eaves Hall Wedding With a Personal Touch

Eaves Hall is a stunner of a venue, but one of the best things about it? You can make it your own. Alice & Tom took full advantage—opting for a relaxed setup that let their guests enjoy the gorgeous grounds, complete with outdoor games, a big swing hanging from the tree, and plenty of space for people to unwind.

And then there was the car – Alice’s late grandad’s classic Beetle, proudly parked up as a special way to have a part of him there on the day. A beautiful, sentimental touch that made the wedding feel even more personal.

A Documentary Wedding Photographer’s Dream – Paper Planes & Penny Stealing the Show

As a documentary wedding photographer, I’m always looking for those unexpected, little moments that make a day unique. Alice & Tom’s ceremony had plenty, but one of my favourites had to be the paper planes.

As well as confetti, guests threw paper planes as the newlyweds walked back down the aisle—simple, fun, and a lovely little twist on tradition. (Also, full marks to the guests who actually managed to get theirs airborne. Some…let’s just say, didn’t quite take off.)

And then, of course, there was Penny. Their chocolate Labrador, their baby, and the most important four-legged guest. She was an absolute star of the day—gracefully strolling around like she owned the place, greeting guests, and casually inserting herself into as many photos as possible – look out for the little present she left on the lawn when no-one was looking!

It was clear how much it meant to Alice & Tom to have her there, and having had my own Choccie Lab at my own wedding, I completely got it. There’s something special about having your furry friend by your side on such an important day – they’re part of your family.

“Theo was absolutely fantastic all day, capturing our special day so beautifully. All of our guests commented on how he blended so well with them, and there wasn’t a single moment missed.”

A Laid-Back Reception With a Competitive Edge

Post-ceremony, drinks were poured, guests relaxed, and the games were in full swing, here’s what was on offer:

  • A full size snooker table to channel your inner Ronnie O’Sullivan
  • A mini bean bag toss game (some guests had a very questionable aim)
  • A fishing game (harder than it looks)
  • A game of boules, because nothing says “friendly wedding competition” like throwing metal balls across a lawn

The whole setup made for such a fun, easygoing afternoon—exactly the kind of atmosphere Alice & Tom wanted.

Speeches, DIY CAKES & A First Dance That Hit Different

The speeches were a perfect mix of heartfelt and hilarious, with just the right amount of light Mickey-taking (Tom, I hope you’ve recovered). Then came the food, which—like everything else that day—felt personal.

Because Alice didn’t just organize the cake. She made it. And, as if that wasn’t enough, she also baked a stack of brownies, which I was very happy to be forced into taking home. What a shame!

And then, before the party got going, came one of my favourite moments—the first dance. No over-the-top choreography, no ‘look at us’ moment. Just two people who have been in each other’s lives forever, taking it all in, surrounded by their nearest and dearest.

“We couldn’t have wished for a better photographer, and we’d get married again just to have him snap more incredible pictures!”

A Laid back Wedding That Felt Wholesome & Genuine

Alice & Tom wanted their wedding to be relaxed, intimate, and authentic—and that’s exactly what it was. No stress, no fuss, just a day full of love, laughter, and a few perfectly unscripted moments (thanks again, Penny).

“Thank you, Theo, for not only capturing our day but also being a part of it!”

Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better couple. Alice & Tom, your wedding was a joy from start to finish, and if you do decide to get married again just for the photos—well, you know where to find me. Here’s a few more favourites from the day:

How to Plan an Intimate Relaxed Wedding at Eaves Hall

If Alice & Tom’s wedding sounds like your vibe, here are a few tips to help you create your own intimate and relaxed wedding at Eaves Hall:

  • Keep the guest list small – If you want a chilled-out atmosphere, consider a smaller guest list like Alice & Tom’s (30 day guests, 30 evening). It makes everything feel more personal and less like a production.
  • Make it your own – Eaves Hall is stunning on its own, but little personal touches (like Alice’s late grandad’s Beetle) make the day extra special.
  • Use the outdoor space – Whether it’s a tree swing, lawn games, or bringing your four-legged best mate along, Eaves Hall gives you loads of flexibility to keep things fun and informal. The venue’s 13 acres of beautifully looked-after gardens are perfect for outdoor activities and provide a picturesque backdrop for your celebration.
  • Ditch the stress – This is your day, so do it your way. Paper planes and confetti? Absolutely. Your dog stealing the spotlight? Even better.
  • Hire a documentary wedding photographer – If you want every laugh, tear, and slightly chaotic moment captured without feeling posed or forced.

If you’re planning your own relaxed wedding and want candid, documentary wedding photography, let’s chat! I’d love to capture all the real moments, big laughs, and unforgettable energy of your day.
